mi gente

About a year ago I posted about one of my favorite people from Jersey coming to Salt Lake to serve a mission for my church. Well his brother has followed right behind him. Dario will be serving in the Provo , UT mission (english speaking). I am so proud of these two, I feel like their sister or something. (technically I am their sister :))

Can I just brag about these fine young men for a second? They are the only members of the church in their family. They have been ridiculed and persecuted for years because their family doesn't believe in that in which they are so convicted. They saved and worked so hard to be here. The spirit just emulates through them. Juan, the older brother, is serving in SLC. (spanish speaking) We took Dario to see Temple Square and it just so happened that it is Juan's current area. We were lucky enough to meet up with Juan and visit for a few minutes. They were so cute together. Juan gave his younger brother such good advice, it made me want to cry.

I thought it was so random they both were called to serve here in Utah. I love that we have the chance of bumping into them. If you see these two elders walking down the street, please take a few minutes to talk to them and you will see just how amazing they really are.

Thank you "fritos"! Thank you for hanging out for a day and reminding me why I miss Jersey so very much. Thank you for reminding me to stand a little taller.

Cinco De Mayo

For a little culture awareness, I just wanted to post this.

Most Americans (me included) think that May 5 is like July 4th for Mexicans. Not true.

My husband tells me it's really not that big of a deal. I think some Americans may celebrate it more than they do. No harm done, go have your favorite mexican food.

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "5th of May") is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla. It is not an obligatory federal holiday.[1][2][3][4][5] The holiday commemorates an initial victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
A common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day; Mexico's Independence Day is actually September 16 (dieciséis de septiembre in Spanish), which is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

In my graphic design class last year we were asked to bring in our favorite ad. Oh how I wish I had found this back then. I don't remember exactly, but I believe I found it in a PEOPLE magazine. Talk about interactive advertising. If you aren't sure what Welch's grape juice tastes like, just lift the flap and there is a test strip. It is similar to Listerine strips or other breath freshening strips. The strip looks like a purple piece of paper and it dissolves on your tongue. What a genius idea! Except I haven't seen it anywhere else, so I'm not sure it has really went over that well or if the cost was worth the effort. Keep up the creativity, ad creators!

Purpose

I've been pondering the purpose of my blog lately. When I first started this blog, I was in college and had a lot more free time and much more drama. I took a lot more pictures back then. I can't write a post without a picture, it just looks wrong. As of late, it has become a place where I post products that I want but can't buy. Sometimes I have participated in the famous blog "tags" because of boredom at work and the want to type or post a picture. On the occasion we do something and I remember my camera, I will post about our life so our family and friends in other parts of the world can keep up with us.

I've thought of deleting it, I've thought of making it private, and I've thought of making an effort of posting more often. None of these have come to be. But I do find that my blog still has purpose. This blog helps my boredom at work. It helps me get ideas out my head. It helps me post a picture of something I like instead of wasting money on it. Sometimes, when our family and friends get lucky, it gives them a glimpse into our life. So my apologies if my blog is boring or doesn't compare. I won't promise wonderful things, but I do promise it will be no more random than the thoughts in my mind. Welcome to my life and my wandering mind.
